Cyclothymic Disorder

Cyclothymic Disorder is a chronic but less severe form of bipolar disorder. People with cyclothymia experience ongoing mood fluctuations — periods of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms — that last for at least two years in adults (one year in children). While the symptoms don’t meet full criteria for hypomania or depression, they can still disrupt daily functioning and cause emotional instability. If left untreated, cyclothymia may progress into bipolar I or II disorder.

What constitutes Cyclothymic Disorder?

A diagnosis is made when an individual has frequent periods of hypomanic symptoms and depressive symptoms over a two-year period, with no symptom-free interval longer than two months. The mood shifts are noticeable but less intense than in bipolar I or II.

Symptoms and warning signs

  • Alternating periods of elevated mood (increased energy, confidence, talkativeness)
  • Periods of low mood (sadness, fatigue, loss of motivation)
  • Emotional instability and unpredictability
  • Irritability and difficulty managing stress
  • Strain on relationships due to mood fluctuations

Causes and risk factors

  • Family history of bipolar or mood disorders
  • Brain chemistry dysregulation
  • Early life stressors or trauma
  • Irregular sleep or lifestyle habits

Treatment approaches

  • Medication: mood stabilizers or antipsychotics if symptoms are disruptive
  • Therapy: CBT and psychoeducation to manage mood fluctuations
  • Lifestyle adjustments: sleep regulation, stress management, healthy routines
  • Monitoring: regular psychiatric follow-up to prevent progression into more severe bipolar disorder
