Personality Disorders
Personality disorders (PDs) are long-term patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are rigid, maladaptive, and significantly different from cultural expectations. These patterns develop in adolescence or early adulthood and are stable over time, influencing social, occupational, and interpersonal functioning. Individuals with PDs often experience distress, though in some cases their behaviors are ego-syntonic—they perceive their actions as normal, even if others find them problematic.
PDs are grouped into three clusters:
- Cluster A (Odd/Eccentric): Suspicious, socially withdrawn, or odd behaviors.
- Cluster B (Dramatic, Emotional, or Erratic): Impulsive, emotional, or attention-seeking behaviors.
- Cluster C (Anxious or Fearful): Avoidant, dependent, or perfectionistic behaviors.
